The Increasing Passion for Pide

There seems to be a food holiday every calendar day of the year, but the LloydPans innovation team is especially excited about a particular upcoming event — National Pizza Day! This Sunday, Feb. 9, Americans have a special opportunity to sink their teeth into their favorite pies —  from meat lovers to plant-based to five cheese — pizza truly offers something for everyone. If there was ever a day to bring up age old pizza debates — pineapple, yes or no? Thin crust or deep dish? Detroit-style or New York-style? — National Pizza Day is a prime opportunity to discuss over your favorites.

For those of you who love a slice of history, National Pizza Day is one that goes back quite a bit. The first pizzeria ever opened in Naples, Italy, in 1738. Thanks to Italian immigrants, pizza made its way to New York City in 1895 by way of Gennaro Lombardi, the first U.S.-based pizzeria. According to National Day Calendar, more than three billion pizzas are sold in the United States each year, and that’s not even counting frozen pizzas (add another one billion for those). Pepperoni is still the favorite, topping 36% of all pizzas ordered at the 17% of pizzeria restaurants in the States.

While you’re out celebrating National Pizza Day and contributing to the average of 23 pounds of pizza eaten per person annually, be sure to hashtag #NationalPizzaDay on your best pizza photos.
